7 Ways To Avoid Using Your Insurance This Thanksgiving

The holidays are here! Soon, if not already, family members will be fighting through lanes of traffic, coming from all over the country to sit around a crackling fire together as the smell of turkey fills their home. Kids will be running through your house, and aunts and uncles will post up in the kitchen, chatting away around the stove. This is a time for togetherness, but we all know it wouldn’t be the holidays without a little chaos! As you get ready to stuff yourself with stuffing and unwind with a glass of wine, keep these holiday safety tips in mind:

Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle

Whether it’s dinner by candlelight or a pine-scented candle in the foyer, fire risks will be lurking in your home this week. Be sure to keep an eye on curious children when the wicks are burning.

Keep newspapers away from the fireplace

Balled-up newspaper and kindling are great tools to get a fire started…in the fireplace! Be sure to move these items a safe distance away from the hearth after you’ve gotten things crackling.

Make long trips with a copilot, and take frequent breaks

Traveling this Thanksgiving? If you can, carpool with another friend or relative, and change drivers when you’re feeling tired. Your family would rather see you arrive late and safe than not at all!

Get your car ready for travel

Before taking a long drive, you should always check your fluids, change your oil and clean your headlights.

Drive Safely

Never, ever, ever drive when you’re tired or buzzed. And never text and drive!

Practice Kitchen Safety

Potholders, wooden spoons, plastic bags, paper towels. These fire risks can often go unnoticed when there are too many cooks in the kitchen. If the kids want to be involved in cooking, assign an older, responsible child the title of “safety monitor.” They get to help, and you get an extra set of eyes.

Check the kitchen before going to bed

Always double check to make sure all your appliances are turned off before going to bed. Many insurance claims are caused by appliances that were left running overnight such as dishwashers, dryers and stoves.
